The Association of Licensed Tourist Guides, Athens-Greece organises every year, during the off season, visits to museums and archaeological sites for further information and education of the licenced tourist guides. For that reason we visited the Benaki Museum, Pireos St. Annexe (Piraeus av. 138) for the temporary exhibition "Karya 1943- Forced Labour and the Holocaust. It's going to last until Sunday, the 16th of February 2025.

This exhibition is the outcome of the Greek -German cooperation and its the first exhibition in both Greece and Germany referring to the Forced Labour of the greek Jews during the Axis Occupation in Greece (1941-1944).

Iasonas Handrinos, historian, researcher and writer, took us to spring of 1943, when the Nazis transferred hundreds of men from Thessaloniki (northern Greece) to Karya in Fthiotis (central Greece) to construct a detour of the main train line Athens- Thessaloniki. The purpose was the Wehrmacht's (unified armed forces of Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1945) trains could be served better.

The work's and living's conditions, as we can imagine, were terrible and many people died due to these hardships or were executed! A few only people managed to escape. Whoever survived was sent in August 1943 to the Auschwitz extermination camp, where they found their end.

We would like to thank Iasonas Handrinos, co-curator of this exhibition for this impressive presentation of this dark page of our local and national history!

We would like to thank all of you who participate and supported the initiatives of the Association of the Licenced Tourist Guides -Athens, Greece!

Oblivion means extinction!
